Clinical Director,
Center for Inner Work
Allen Pluth, Ph.D., LCSW (LCS 14487), brings to the practice of psychotherapy a rich and varied background. He
came to the field of counseling by way of studying patterns of human behavior in world literature, first as a graduate
student, receiving an M.A. degree in that field, then as an owner of a small literary publishing firm. He developed
his counseling skills during his many years of service as a Christian pastor (M. Div.), and deepened them by acquiring
a clinical degree (M.S.W.) from Rutgers University. Dr. Pluth has studied extensively in the area of world religions
and mythology, traveling to Europe and India for that purpose. He specializes in counseling from a psycho-spiritual
perspective, utilizing the client¹s own belief system to develop motivation and capabilities, fulfill potential,
enhance relationships, provide spiritual guidance, and ultimately deal with bereavement issues. |

To enhance his effectiveness in these areas, he also received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Pacifica Graduate
Institute, where he had intense training in dream analysis.
As a supervisory psychotherapist for the U.S. Navy Family Advocacy
Program, he designed programs for the treatment of domestic abuse victims and offenders, and has made presentations
and led workshops on domestic violence trauma and treatment at conferences throughout the U.S. He has supervised
many Ph.D. and Master¹s Degree interns over the years, which has continued to deepen his own practice of psychotherapy.
He leads a weekly therapy group for men, in which members deal with identity, inner healing, personal development,
career, anger management, addictions, grief and loss, and relationship issues, as well as with the various challenges
of being a male in contemporary society.
Because he has himself been struggling successfully for many years to overcome physical limitations from Multiple
Sclerosis, Dr. Pluth is in a special position to provide counseling--individual, family, and group--to those dealing,
directly or indirectly, with chronic illness, pain, and their resulting disabilities.
Dr. Pluth utilizes a wide variety of therapeutic techniques, including hypnosis and imaginal dialogues, to access
the unconscious and its dynamics. He also has extensive experience working with dreams for personal growth and
guidance, both with individuals and in group settings. He has more than 30 years of experience, providing individual
therapy, couples counseling, family therapy, group facilitation, and specialized therapy for family members involved
in domestic abuse situations. His current area of interest is exploring exactly how positive change occurs in psychotherapy.
Dr. Pluth is personally warm, understanding, gently confrontational when necessary, and compassionate with his
clients. He feels strongly that the cultivation of empathy for self and others by clients (see his article on this
site), provides an indispensable foundation for the process of inner healing, for dealing constructively with difficult
relationships, and for enhancing personal growth.
